Reserve or
conservancy?
Both can be excellent, but they offer different experiences.
The national reserve provides access to the main migration crossings, while the adjoining private conservancies control vehicle numbers and allow activities such as walking and night drives. Many itineraries combine the two; at other times we may recommend staying entirely in a conservancy.
More than the Migration
The Mara’s resident wildlife makes it relevant beyond the months when the migrating herds are present. If the Migration is a priority, we choose the area for your dates and allow time for the wider safari. A river crossing should be a possibility, rather than the only reason for the journey.
Choose the right part of the ecosystem
A National Reserve stay, the Mara Triangle and a private conservancy can create different daily experiences. We compare driving distances, vehicle numbers, activities and reserve access before recommending a camp. Give the safari time
Several nights in a well-chosen camp gives you more room to enjoy wildlife than a sequence of short stops. Pair the Mara with Laikipia for a contrasting safari, or Lamu and the coast for a slower finish. We choose the camps and connections around the whole journey.
The Migration
The herds are usually in the ecosystem between July and October, but rainfall determines their exact position and crossings cannot be guaranteed.
Private conservancies
Lower vehicle density, strong guiding and a greater range of activities often create a more relaxed safari.
