When to go

When to visit
Kenya.

Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but the weather, migration and value change through the seasons.

January—March

Warm, generally dry & clear

On safari

A very good time for safari across much of Kenya. Wildlife viewing is strong and the skies are often clear, although localised showers remain possible.

On the coast

Hot, humid and generally sunny. The north-easterly monsoon usually brings lighter winds and calmer water, making this one of the stronger periods for a beach stay, diving and snorkelling. Brief showers remain possible, particularly as March progresses.

April—May

The long rains

On safari

Usually the wettest period. Landscapes are green, visitor numbers are lower and prices can be attractive, but some camps close and heavy rain may affect roads and activities.

On the coast

This is normally the wettest and most humid period on the coast. Heavy showers can be prolonged, seas may be rougher and some smaller hotels close or reduce operations; choose it for value, not guaranteed beach weather.

June—October

The long dry season

On safari

Excellent safari conditions across the country. The migrating herds usually reach the Mara between July and October, although exact movements and river crossings depend on rainfall.

On the coast

Warm rather than fiercely hot, with lower humidity and much less rain. The south-easterly trade wind can make exposed beaches breezy and the sea choppier—particularly from June to August—although conditions vary between Lamu, Watamu and Diani.

November—December

Short rains & green landscapes

On safari

Short, often localised showers refresh the landscape. November can offer good value, while the Christmas and New Year period is busy and priced accordingly.

On the coast

Heat and humidity build as the wind changes direction. Short tropical showers are common, particularly in November, but there is often plenty of sunshine between them and sea conditions generally become calmer towards Christmas.
