Our take

About Offbeat Mara

Offbeat Mara is a small tented camp beside the Olare Orok stream in Mara North Conservancy. Seven tents, flexible safari days and a convivial mess tent keep the emphasis on wildlife, guiding and a traditional camp atmosphere.

Offbeat Mara sits in the southern part of Mara North, a conservancy adjoining the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The setting combines riverine woodland with open wildlife country, and the camp remains small enough to feel personal. Its shared spaces include a bar, dining area, fireside lounge and forest deck. The experience is rooted in time out with guides and relaxed evenings in camp, with fewer layers of formality than a larger lodge.

Accommodation

Rooms

Seven en-suite tents comprise five double or twin tents and two family tents. The standard tents have double and single beds, private verandas, charging points and bathrooms with flushing toilets and plumbed hot showers. Family accommodation provides separate sleeping areas and additional bathroom facilities, giving parents and children more space. Canvas bedrooms and open verandas preserve the feel of a traditional bush camp, while the recently refreshed shared areas provide comfortable places to gather.

02

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are fresh, homely and sociable, served in the mess or outside when conditions suit. Bush breakfasts, picnic lunches and sundowners allow time away from camp without rushing back for every meal. Private dining on a veranda can also be arranged, with family mealtimes considered when planning the day.

03

What to do

Activities

Game drives explore Mara North by day and into the evening, with guided walks offering a closer look at tracks, plants and smaller wildlife. Cultural visits, markets and runs with Maasai guides add variety beyond vehicle safaris. Balloon flights are an additional excursion. A visit to the national reserve can be planned where useful, particularly during the migration season, although herd movements and river crossings remain unpredictable.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

The two family tents offer separate sleeping areas, rather than placing everyone in one standard bedroom. Their layout and extra bathroom space make a useful difference on a longer stay. Safari timing can incorporate children's meals and rest periods.

What sets it apart

Offbeat combines a deliberately small camp with access to a private conservancy, where walking and evening drives broaden the safari beyond reserve game drives. Its woodland deck and informal mess create a comfortable social centre between outings.

Before you book

The camp is unfenced and wildlife can move through the grounds, so staff guidance and escorts matter after dark. Mara North activities operate under conservancy rules; outings into the national reserve involve separate access arrangements and applicable fees.
