Our take
Mara Expedition Camp is a small Great Plains camp in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with five double tents and one two-bedroom family tent. Campaign-style furnishings, an interactive kitchen and an unusual swimming pool give it a distinct, informal character.
Canvas tents sit among acacias overlooking a valley, with shared spaces that draw on the style of early safari expeditions. The camp is deliberately intimate, with the wildlife programme taking priority over formal luxury presentation. Most drives explore the National Reserve, while occasional access to Mara North Conservancy adds another setting. A pool fashioned from an army truck is an unusual place to cool off.

Accommodation
There are five double guest tents and a separate two-bedroom family tent, making six tented units in total. Light canvas, high ceilings and private verandas keep the rooms connected to the outdoors. Bathrooms have showers, twin basins and flushing toilets. Double or twin beds are available in the standard tents; the family layout should be requested specifically.

Food & drink
The interactive kitchen is a distinctive feature, offering a closer look at the food being prepared. Shared dining and evenings by the fire preserve the camp’s informal atmosphere, while private tent dining can be requested. Picnic meals allow longer wildlife outings without having to break the day for a return to camp.

Open-vehicle drives focus on the National Reserve, with occasional Mara North excursions providing a conservancy contrast. Full-day drives with picnic meals can be arranged, and balloon flights are an optional extra. Botanical walks around camp and kitchen experiences add interest between outings. Migration timing varies with rain and grazing, so neither herd positions nor river crossings can be guaranteed.

The two-bedroom family tent provides more appropriate shared accommodation than adding beds to a standard tent. Families should discuss children’s ages and whether a private vehicle would improve the pace of the safari; this is a separate arrangement from simply booking the larger tent.
The army-truck swimming pool and interactive kitchen distinguish Mara Expedition from a generic canvas camp. Its scale keeps the experience personal, while reserve drives and occasional conservancy access offer more than one wildlife setting.
