Our take

About Serian Nkorombo

Serian’s Nkorombo is a five-tent camp beside the Mara River inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Traditional canvas accommodation, bucket showers and private guiding create a deliberately simple safari stay, with wildlife watching taking priority over extensive lodge facilities.

Nkorombo occupies a private campsite on the bank of the Mara River within the national reserve. Wild olive and orange croton provide shelter around the small camp, while hippos and other wildlife give the river setting its character. Its mobile-style construction is more traditional than Serian’s fixed camps. Evenings centre on the campfire and shared meals, and the stay is designed around time exploring the reserve with a dedicated guide rather than a large activity menu.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Five Selous-style canvas tents provide en-suite accommodation, furnished with weathered timber, leather and light fabrics. Bathrooms have flushing toilets and safari bucket showers, a deliberate feature of the camp’s traditional setup rather than the plumbed rain showers found in larger lodges. Electricity is generator-powered, and the camp has no Wi-Fi. Guests should choose Nkorombo for its small scale and close connection to the river, with realistic expectations about the facilities.

02

Food & drink

Dining

Dining is communal, in the mess tent or in shaded spots on the riverbank. The small group shares the camp’s hosted atmosphere, with campfire drinks before dinner. A picnic can accompany a longer wildlife outing, allowing the guide to plan the day around sightings rather than a compulsory return to camp at lunchtime.

What to do

Activities

Each booking group has exclusive use of a safari vehicle, dedicated guide and spotter. That allows flexible game drives, from a longer day with a picnic to a shorter outing followed by time in camp. The reserve’s resident wildlife provides interest beyond the migration season. Nearby river-crossing areas can be explored when the herds are present, but crossings cannot be guaranteed. The safari programme follows the national reserve’s daytime driving rules.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

Private guiding can make the drive programme easier to adapt for a family, but this remains an unfenced riverside camp with a traditional bathroom setup. Discuss the tent layout and children’s needs before booking. The accommodation and programme are centred on a traditional tented safari experience.

What sets it apart

Nkorombo combines a small national-reserve campsite with private vehicles and guiding as a core part of the stay. Its riverside position and traditional bucket showers give it a different character from Serian’s fixed Mara North camps.

Before you book

Expect bucket showers and no Wi-Fi rather than a lodge-style connectivity and spa offering. Musiara is the preferred arrival airstrip. Because Nkorombo is inside the national reserve, wildlife drives follow reserve rules and differ from conservancy programmes.

Make it part of a journey

A stay shaped around you.

Nkorombo can complement Serian or Ngare Serian when a trip deliberately combines reserve and conservancy stays. Give each part enough nights to avoid repeating transfers. If migration watching is a priority, plan for the likely seasonal area while retaining flexibility for the actual movement of the herds.
