Our take
Governors’ Camp is a long-established canvas camp beside the Mara River in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Its riverside setting near Musiara Marsh, experienced guides and 24 tents offer a classic safari centred on wildlife rather than elaborate lodge architecture.
Established in 1972, Governors’ retains a traditional camp layout beneath riverine trees, with a bar deck facing the Mara River and a dining tent looking towards the plains. Hippos and other wildlife are part of the surroundings, and the unfenced setting calls for the usual care when moving around camp. Solar power supports its operation, while a spa tent adds a quieter option between drives. The location provides access to resident wildlife throughout the year.

Accommodation
The current camp has 24 en-suite tents, including five family tents. River-facing tents sit within the woodland, while the family tents look towards the open plains. Each has a private veranda and bathroom, keeping accommodation under canvas rather than in solid-walled suites. Family layouts can sleep up to five, with cots available on request. Choosing between the river and plains outlook is an important part of selecting the right tent.

Food & drink
Breakfast can be enjoyed in camp or packed for an early drive. Lunch is often served beneath the trees by the river, while evenings combine à la carte dining with occasional themed buffet nights. Produce comes from the camp gardens and local suppliers. Special sit-down bush meals are arranged separately and carry an additional charge.

What to do
Up to three guided game drives can be offered on a full day, exploring the reserve around Musiara Marsh and the river. Resident predators and plains game make the area interesting beyond migration season. A balloon safari gives another perspective and is booked separately, while massage is available in the spa tent. As a national reserve stay, the experience follows reserve rules rather than assuming the night drives and walking freedom of a private conservancy.

Five family tents provide space for up to five guests, and cots can be requested for infants. The Governors’ Cub Club adds age-appropriate safari learning. An unfenced riverside camp still requires close supervision, particularly when children move between tents and shared areas.
