Great Migration herds spread across the Maasai Mara beneath a hot-air balloon

The Great Migration

A remarkable season,
never a scheduled show.

The Migration can be extraordinary, but no honest specialist can promise the exact position of the herds or a river crossing.

Our take

Plan for the ecosystem,
not one crossing.

The Migration can be extraordinary, but no honest specialist can promise the exact position of the herds or a river crossing.

The herds generally move into the greater Mara ecosystem between July and October, with timing governed by rainfall and grazing. We choose between the reserve, Mara Triangle and neighbouring conservancies according to your dates, priorities and tolerance for busier sightings.

01

Usually July–October

This is the broad period when the herds are normally in the Mara ecosystem, rather than a guarantee for any particular week.

02

Crossings are unpredictable

A crossing may happen suddenly after hours of waiting—or not at all. Excellent resident wildlife remains the sound basis for the trip.

03

Location matters

Reserve camps offer the easiest access to principal crossing areas; conservancies provide lower vehicle density and more varied activities.

Where to stay

The Maasai Mara

For the most migration-focused itinerary, stay within sensible reach of the Mara River or key reserve areas. A split with a private conservancy can add quieter sightings, walking and night drives.

When to travel

Build in time

Three nights is possible, but four or five gives greater flexibility. Peak weeks should be booked well ahead and priced as high season.

How we plan it

Do not chase headlines

We favour strong guides, flexible game-drive arrangements and good year-round wildlife over camps chosen solely for a claimed crossing location.

A sensible shape

A strong migration trip often combines four nights in the reserve or Mara Triangle with three nights in a private conservancy, rather than moving camp every day.
