Our take

About Sand River

Sand River Masai Mara is a sixteen-tent camp beside its namesake river inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Two smaller camp sections, traditional safari interiors and a two-bedroom family tent create a classic base in the reserve’s southern landscape.

Sand River lies near the Tanzanian border, in a quieter southern part of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp’s canvas rooms and period-inspired interiors reference the permanent safari camps of the 1920s. Accommodation is divided between Sand River and Little Sand River, each with its own main and dining areas, which reduces the sense of staying in one larger camp. The river setting adds atmosphere, although herd positions and migration events vary from season to season.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Sixteen tented accommodation units comprise fifteen standard double or twin tents and one family tent. The family option has two en-suite bedrooms connected by a central lounge. Sand River has ten tents and Little Sand River six, with separate shared areas for each section. Four standard tents have daybeds that can be used as extra beds. Private decks face the river landscape, but additional occupancy should follow the specific tent booked.

Food & drink

Dining

Each camp section has its own dining and main areas, allowing meals to remain intimate within the sixteen-tent property. The kitchen provides meals around the safari programme, with picnic arrangements for longer drives. Outdoor meals and sundowners make use of the surrounding landscape when conditions allow; dietary requests should be shared ahead of the stay.

03

What to do

Activities

Drives explore the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with opportunities to spend longer in the southern landscape or follow wildlife farther afield. Resident animals provide a reason to visit beyond migration months. Bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners can accompany outings, and balloon safaris can be arranged at additional cost. Game drives follow the National Reserve’s access rules.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

The family tent provides two en-suite bedrooms linked by a central lounge. Selected standard tents have daybeds for additional occupancy. Families should choose between these layouts rather than assuming all tents take extra beds, and guiding can be adapted around children’s routines.

What sets it apart

The southern reserve position, riverside tents and two separate camp sections give Sand River a traditional safari atmosphere. The dedicated family tent adds a clear accommodation option, while separate dining areas help preserve a smaller-camp feel.

Before you book

The camp is inside the national reserve, not Mara North or another private conservancy. Reserve regulations govern driving and activities. Flights and transfers need to suit its southern location, and river views do not guarantee visible migration crossings from camp.

Make it part of a journey

A stay shaped around you.

Sand River can provide a distinct southern Mara perspective within a wider Kenya safari. Pair it with Laikipia or a carefully chosen conservancy only where that combination adds different activities or scenery. Allow several nights so the location does not become a long transfer followed by a brief drive.
