Our take

About Kinondo Kwetu

Kinondo Kwetu is a family-owned beach retreat at the quieter end of Galu Beach, south of Diani. Individually furnished cottages and villa rooms, changing dining settings and a wide range of activities give it the warmth and flexibility of a coastal home.

Set within a 16-acre coastal property beside protected Kaya forest, Kinondo Kwetu feels personal rather than formal. Swahili crafts, antiques and African art give the rooms and shared spaces their character, with shady gardens between the accommodation and sea. The Andersson family’s approach centres on relaxed hospitality and time outdoors. Two swimming pools, a yoga deck and a sauna sit alongside the beach, while the range of activities allows an energetic stay as easily as a quiet one.

Accommodation

Rooms

Accommodation spans five cottages, Mama Taa Villa, Mama Tina Villa and Alex House. The cottages include doubles and larger interconnected family layouts. Mama Taa offers individually sold rooms, including honeymoon and family suites and interconnecting rooms. Mama Tina has a double bedroom and two further bedrooms sharing a bathroom. Alex House is a separate four-bedroom option. Many rooms are air-conditioned, with verandas or balconies; the exact bedroom and bathroom arrangement varies substantially between categories.

Food & drink

Dining

Three-course lunches and dinners change setting, from shade beside the beach to evenings beneath the stars. Coastal flavours feature alongside international dishes, with local fruit and vegetables and fish from the Indian Ocean. The kitchen works with a set menu but can adapt it to preferences, allergies and children’s needs when discussed in advance.

What to do

Activities

On-site stables make riding along the beach and through the Kaya forest possible, while tennis, yoga, the gym and pools provide activity without leaving the property. Watersports include paddleboarding, sailing, diving, snorkelling and fishing, with some specialist instruction arranged nearby. Community visits and excursions towards Shimba Hills or Mombasa add variety. Wind, tides and sea conditions govern marine outings, and riding suitability depends on the guest’s experience and chosen route.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

Interconnecting rooms and several cottage layouts suit different family sizes. Mama Tina’s two additional bedrooms share a bathroom, while Alex House offers four bedrooms as a separate home. The important distinction is how the rooms connect, not simply how many people the property can host.

What sets it apart

The combination of a secluded stretch of Galu Beach and an unusually broad activity choice is its strength. Horse riding, tennis and varied watersports allow different generations to share a stay without following the same programme.

Before you book

Kinondo Kwetu lies south of Diani’s main hotel strip, so transfers should be planned for Galu rather than central Diani. Room categories are individual and not interchangeable; the villa’s bathrooms, air-conditioning and privacy arrangements deserve attention when choosing accommodation.

Make it part of a journey

A stay shaped around you.

We would start with the right accommodation layout, then build a coastal stay around your interests. Kinondo can work particularly well when some travellers want tennis, riding or watersports and others want beach time. A Mara or Laikipia safari before it provides a clear change of pace.

These journeys are starting points. We adapt the route, accommodation and length of stay around your plans.
