Our take

About Suyian Lodge

Suyian Lodge has fourteen suites overlooking a private conservancy in northern Laikipia, each with its own plunge pool. Stone-led design, a family suite and a varied programme of drives, walks and riding provide a contemporary base in a less visited landscape.

The lodge follows a rocky escarpment within Suyian Conservancy, with views towards the Ewaso Narok River and Mount Kenya. Architecture uses curved forms and earthy textures to echo the surrounding boulders rather than recreate a traditional canvas camp. Shared facilities include a swimming pool, bar, library, interactive kitchen, fitness space and wellness centre. The conservancy is the focus of the safari, offering varied northern wildlife and a connection with local ranching and community life.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

Fourteen suites include thirteen standard suites and one two-bedroom Family Suite. Each has a private rim-flow plunge pool, generous living space and views across the escarpment. The Family Suite adds a children’s bedroom and en-suite bathroom. Suite configurations can vary where an extra guest is considered, so a triple arrangement needs to be booked specifically. The rocky setting and paths also matter when choosing rooms for guests with limited mobility.

02

Food & drink

Dining

Meals can be served in the shared guest areas, on the deck, by the pool or privately in a suite. The house kitchen adds a more informal setting, including afternoon tea around its Aga. A private dining and wine room offers another option. Dietary requirements are planned ahead, with the daily schedule shaped around the chosen safari activities.

What to do

Activities

Game drives and guided nature walks explore Suyian’s varied terrain, with horse riding, walking alongside camels and local community visits offering alternatives. Active ranching experiences introduce the working landscape. Yoga, gym sessions and wellness treatments provide quieter time at the lodge. Helicopter excursions and some specialist experiences cost extra; rare wildlife such as black leopard and wild dog may occur in the region but sightings cannot be promised.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

The Family Suite has a separate children’s bedroom and bathroom, with the standard arrangement accommodating two adults and two children. Additional occupancy needs a specific booking arrangement. WILDchild activities introduce younger guests to the bush, while riding and walks follow age and experience requirements.

What sets it apart

Private plunge pools, distinctive architecture and a less visited Laikipia setting give Suyian a contemporary character. The balance of wildlife, active ranching, riding and wellness offers reasons to stay beyond a simple sequence of game drives.

Before you book

The lodge’s rocky escarpment setting is not fully wheelchair accessible. Standard rates centre on game drives and nature walks, while riding, helicopter trips and selected wellness services have separate arrangements or charges. Take layers for mornings and clarify any family or triple-suite requirements when booking.

Make it part of a journey

A stay shaped around you.

Suyian makes a contrasting Laikipia partner to a Mara safari, with space for active experiences and a comfortable suite-based stay. Several nights allow time for walking or riding as well as drives. Choose it for the broader landscape and programme rather than building a trip around a hoped-for rare-species sighting.
