Our take

About El Karama Lodge

El Karama is an owner-run lodge on a working Laikipia conservancy, with individually designed bandas, family accommodation and private cottage collections. Walking, fly-camping, farm visits and children’s Bush School create a varied safari shaped around time outdoors.

El Karama has the character of a handmade bush home, developed by Sophie and Murray Grant with their local team. River stone, fallen timber, thatch and canvas give the rooms individual personalities. Wildlife shares the landscape with a working ranch, making conservation and food production part of the visit. The lodge has a chemical-free swimming pool, a Bush Spa, a gym and a running track, with both shared and exclusive-use accommodation available.

Accommodation

Rooms

Main-lodge accommodation includes three bandas, the Hobbit House and two River Cottages. All have en-suite facilities, but their layouts differ. The Hobbit House sleeps up to six, with two bedrooms and mezzanine sleeping areas reached by steep stairs. The River Cottages can be reserved together with private living and dining space. Separately, Nilotica Private comprises four cottages, including a family suite, and accommodates up to ten guests.

Food & drink

Dining

The Bush Kitchen uses produce from the lodge’s gardens and working ranch, including fruit, vegetables, meat and milk. Meals can be enjoyed in the lodge, by the pool or outdoors around an open fire. Private cottage collections have their own dining arrangements. Cooking experiences and garden visits offer a practical connection with what arrives on the table.

03

What to do

Activities

Activities include day and night drives, guided walks, horse riding, fly-camping, farm visits and time at the wildlife hide. Bush School introduces children to tracking, nature and ranch life through hands-on activities. Spa treatments, the gym and running track provide options at camp. Longer excursions can link with other northern Kenya experiences; horse riding and overnight adventures need to suit the participants’ experience and ages.

Planning your stay

The details that make a difference.

Travelling together

The Hobbit House and exclusive-use cottage collections offer several family arrangements. Its mezzanine beds involve steep stairs and are intended for older children. Nilotica includes interconnecting bedrooms, while River Cottages give teenagers or adults separate rooms with private shared dining space.

What sets it apart

The combination of a working ranch, handmade rooms and Bush School gives El Karama a different rhythm from a drive-focused camp. Private cottage collections offer flexibility for groups, while the kitchen, wildlife hide and outdoor activities encourage involvement rather than observation alone.

Before you book

Accommodation is spread between distinct collections, so book the specific unit rather than relying on a general room count. Bathrooms and stair access vary. Riding, fly-camping and private guiding should be incorporated into the plan before arrival, particularly for mixed-age family groups.

Make it part of a journey

A stay shaped around you.

Choose El Karama for a Laikipia stay with several different ways to spend the day. It combines naturally with the Maasai Mara or Samburu, but deserves time for walking and ranch experiences of its own. Room layout and private dining arrangements are especially useful when balancing children’s routines with adult interests.
