Choose one priority before choosing camps
A first safari can mean very different things: big cats, a quieter conservancy, varied activities, or a few wildlife-filled days before the coast. Decide what you most want to remember. If classic wildlife is the priority, start with the Maasai Mara. If you want walking, conservation and more varied days, consider Laikipia alongside it.
Give each place enough time
Four nights in one area is often a more rewarding starting point than several two-night stops. You can settle into camp, enjoy an unhurried morning and spend longer at sightings. For two safari regions, six to eight nights gives a useful planning framework. Travel days and arrival times matter as much as the headline night count.
Choose the camp for its location and guiding
A beautiful room does not tell you how a safari day will feel. Ask where game drives take place, whether vehicles are shared, which activities are included and how the camp reaches the wildlife areas that interest you. Compare our Kenya lodge directory with the regional guides rather than choosing from photographs alone.
Reserve or conservancy?
The reserve and surrounding conservancies are parts of one wider ecosystem. Camp access, vehicle rules and activities differ. A conservancy can suit travellers looking for quieter sightings and varied activities; a reserve camp can be useful when proximity to a particular crossing area matters. Our Mara comparison guide explains the trade-offs.
Plan the season and budget together
Use our when-to-go guide to compare wildlife, rainfall and coastal conditions. Be clear whether your budget includes international flights, and compare park fees, activities, drinks and transfers on the same basis. See how Kenya safari costs work before narrowing your shortlist.
Build in a relaxed finish
The coast can add a different rhythm, but it is optional. Some travellers prefer the whole holiday on safari. If you add the beach, choose Lamu, Watamu or Diani for the atmosphere and season that suit you.
