Diani and the south coast
Diani has a long white-sand beach, a broad choice of hotels and villas, and straightforward access via Ukunda Airport. It suits travellers looking for a conventional beach stay with restaurants, watersports and a range of accommodation styles.
Quieter areas further south, including Kinondo, feel more secluded while retaining access to the same coastline.
Watamu
Watamu combines beaches, reefs, marine activities and a relaxed town with independent restaurants. It is a good choice for active couples and families who want more than a resort environment.
Tides have a visible effect on the beaches and the setting varies between Watamu Bay, Turtle Bay and the creeks, making the precise hotel location important.
Lamu
Lamu is the most distinctive cultural option. Shela and the surrounding archipelago offer Swahili architecture, dhow sailing, narrow lanes and intimate hotels rather than large resorts.
It suits travellers who value character and atmosphere. It may not suit someone seeking a highly polished, facility-led beach resort.
Weather and sea conditions
January to March is broadly hot, sunny and humid. April and May bring the long rains, when some smaller hotels close. July and August are drier and cooler but can be windy, particularly in more exposed locations.
Seaweed, tides and water clarity vary by beach and season. No single description applies to the entire coast, so we consider the exact property and travel dates together.
Connections from safari
Scheduled flights link the Mara and other safari areas with the coast, sometimes directly and sometimes via Nairobi. Diani uses Ukunda Airport, Watamu is usually reached through Malindi, and Lamu through Manda Airport followed by a boat transfer.
Schedules vary by season, and the flight plan should be checked before confirming the safari camps.

Choose Lamu for culture and intimacy, Watamu for an independent and active beach stay, and Diani for the broadest choice of resorts, villas and long sandy beaches.
For a honeymoon we often favour Lamu; for a family, Watamu or a private south-coast property can be easier. The final decision should always account for the month and the style of the safari before it.
