Start with the route, not a country ranking
Neither country is universally better. Kenya can combine the Mara, northern conservancies and its coast. A northern Tanzania route can combine Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Compare an actual itinerary in each country: nights, camps, travel time and included activities reveal more than a list of famous parks.
If the Great Migration is the priority
The herds move through the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in response to rain and grazing. Their location changes through the year, and no date or camp guarantees a river crossing. Kenya’s Mara is generally associated with the middle-to-later part of the year; Tanzania offers different migration settings across a longer annual cycle. Read our Great Migration guide and choose a camp for your dates.
If you want variety beyond game drives
Kenya’s private conservancies can offer walks, night drives, riding and conservation experiences, depending on the property, local permissions and age limits. Laikipia and Samburu bring a different rhythm from a Mara stay. Tanzania also has varied experiences, but their availability depends on the park and camp: compare the activities in the specific route.
If you are travelling as a family
Room arrangements, private-vehicle requirements and the children’s ages should guide the recommendation. A family house in Kenya may be a better fit than several separate tents; another family may prefer a Tanzania wildlife circuit. Look at family safari options and prioritise manageable transfers and enough nights in each place.
If you want safari and beach
Kenya can finish on Lamu, Diani or Watamu; Tanzania often pairs with Zanzibar. Compare the coast’s conditions separately from the safari season and allow for the actual flights and transfers. Hotel character, tides and activities matter as much as the destination name.
How we would choose
Tell us your month, preferred duration, wildlife interests and budget. We would compare the routes that fit those choices, explain why each camp earns its place and avoid rushing to include too much. Start with our Kenya itineraries or ask us to compare Kenya and Tanzania for your trip.
