Why Kenya works for families
Wildlife density in the Maasai Mara, varied activities in Laikipia and straightforward domestic flights make Kenya a flexible family destination. English is widely spoken and many camps have experienced guides who are excellent with children.
The key is selecting places that welcome families in practice, not merely properties that list a family tent.
The value of a private vehicle
A private vehicle allows the family to choose when to leave, how long to remain at a sighting and when to return to camp. It is particularly useful with younger children, teenagers with different interests or several generations travelling together.
Some camps require families with young children to take a private vehicle, so this should be included in the initial budget.
Family tents and private houses
A family unit may consist of two bedrooms linked by a shared lounge or veranda, while other camps offer separate tents positioned close together. Private houses provide the most flexibility for larger groups, often with their own guide, vehicle and dining team.

Age restrictions
Minimum ages can apply to walking, horse riding, camel trekking and shared game drives. Camps without fences may also have rules about children moving around after dark.

How many places?
Two safari areas are normally enough for a family trip. Four nights in one place gives children time to settle, allows for a slower morning and makes weather or a quiet game drive less consequential.
Laikipia and the Mara are a strong pairing: one offers varied activities and conservation, while the other delivers classic big-game viewing.
Adding the coast
Five to seven nights on the coast gives the trip a relaxed finish. Watamu suits active families interested in marine life and restaurants; Diani offers a wider resort choice; Lamu works for families drawn to culture and smaller characterful hotels.
Seasonal wind, humidity, rain and local sea conditions should be considered before choosing the exact beach.
