Our take

About River Camp Mara

River Camp Mara is an intimate luxury tented camp set on the banks of the Mara River within Kenya’s private Mara North Conservancy. Surrounded by riverine forest and open savannah, the camp combines contemporary comfort with a strong sense of place, offering excellent year-round wildlife viewing in a quieter part of the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem.

River Camp has been designed to sit naturally within its riverside surroundings, with elegant canvas tents connected to welcoming communal areas overlooking the Mara River. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal, with the focus firmly on excellent guiding and time spent in the wilderness rather than an overly formal lodge experience. Staying within Mara North Conservancy also provides greater flexibility than the national reserve, including opportunities for off-road game viewing, night drives and walking safaris.

We recommend River Camp Mara selectively according to season, routing, room availability and the experience offered by the other stops in your itinerary.

Rooms & suites

Accommodation comprises a small collection of spacious tented suites positioned along the river and designed to provide privacy and views into the surrounding bush. Food & drink

Dining

Dining is relaxed and flexible, with fresh, carefully prepared meals served at camp or incorporated into the safari experience. Breakfasts and lunches can be enjoyed overlooking the river, while bush breakfasts, sundowners and dinners beneath the stars make the most of the conservancy setting. Evenings tend to centre around the campfire before dinner, creating the sociable but intimate atmosphere that works particularly well in a small safari camp.

03

What to do

Activities

Game drives explore the wildlife-rich Mara North Conservancy, home to lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and an abundance of plains game throughout the year. The private conservancy setting allows guides greater freedom to move off-road for appropriate sightings and also opens up experiences such as night drives and guided bush walks. Guests can venture into the neighbouring Maasai Mara National Reserve when desired, particularly during the Great Migration season, while hot-air balloon safaris and cultural experiences with local Maasai communities can also be arranged.
