Our take

About Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor is one of the most unique places to stay in the world, blending extraordinary wildlife encounters with exquisite hospitality and a long-term commitment to giraffe conservation. A unique opportunity to meet the resident giraffe, all of whom are of the endangered Rothschild’s species.

From 1930s hunting lodge, to pioneering the conservation of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes in the 1970s, to one of the world’s most iconic boutique hotels, this hotel has one hell of a story, and the writing is on the walls.

We recommend Giraffe Manor selectively according to season, routing, room availability and the experience offered by the other stops in your itinerary.

01

Accommodation

Rooms & suites

The historic 6 bedroom Manor House has extraordinary appeal that harks back to the 1930s when visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris. Guests often remark that it’s like walking into Out of Africa: indeed, one of its twelve rooms is named after the author, Karen Blixen. In 2011, a new section of the manor was created – The Garden Manor – which sits right next door. Although built 78 years later, Tanya and Mikey used reclaimed materials from the period in which the original manor was built and its design replicates that of the main house. The Garden Manor also has six lovely guest rooms.

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are an important part of the stay and are served in a mixture of communal and private settings, from the main dining area to bush breakfasts, picnics and dinners beneath the stars. Menus use fresh produce and can be adapted for dietary requirements when advised in advance.

03

What to do

Activities

The signature experience is meeting the resident Rothschild’s giraffes at breakfast and afternoon tea. A stay can also include the neighbouring Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Karen Blixen Museum and time at The Retreat, depending on timings and availability.
