A family exploring the Kenyan savannah with Maasai guides

Family safaris

A shared adventure,
planned around the family.

Kenya is one of Africa’s strongest family safari destinations, but the right pace and guide make a far greater difference than a long list of children’s activities.

Our take

The guide matters
as much as the camp.

Kenya is one of Africa’s strongest family safari destinations, but the right pace and guide make a far greater difference than a long list of children’s activities.

We plan shorter transfers, flexible game drives and enough downtime, then choose family tents, private houses or interconnecting rooms that genuinely work for your group. A private vehicle is often worth the additional cost, particularly with younger children or a broad range of ages.

01

Private vehicles add freedom

Start later, return early or pause for a child without having to fit around other guests in a shared vehicle.

02

Age policies vary

Walking, riding and some other activities have minimum ages. Some camps also restrict very young children or require a private vehicle.

03

Fewer moves, better trip

Two contrasting safari areas are usually enough. Four nights in one place often works better than several short stays.

Where to go

Mara and Laikipia

The Mara delivers classic wildlife; Laikipia adds walking, camels, horses, conservation and family-friendly private houses.

02

Where to stay

Space and flexibility

Properties such as Lewa Wilderness, Sosian and private safari houses suit families who want personal hosting and activities beyond game drives.

Add the coast

Finish slowly

Watamu, Diani or a private coastal house can work well after safari. We consider sea conditions, journey time and the children’s ages.

A sensible shape

A balanced family journey could combine four nights in Laikipia, four in the Mara and five or six on the coast, with private guiding where it adds genuine value.
