January to March
This is generally a warm, drier period between the short and long rains. Landscapes often remain green, wildlife viewing is strong and the coast is usually hot and sunny, with humidity building towards March.
It is an excellent alternative to the busiest Migration months, particularly for travellers combining safari and beach.
April and May
The long rains usually bring heavier showers, with April commonly the wettest month. Rain tends to arrive in intense periods rather than falling continuously, but roads can become difficult and some smaller camps close.
Prices are lower, landscapes are lush and visitor numbers are light. On the coast, some properties close and sea conditions can be unsettled.
June
Conditions normally become drier during June. The bush is still green, temperatures are comfortable and visitor numbers are usually below their July and August peak.
This can be an excellent month for a broad Kenya safari, though the migrating herds may not yet have reached the Mara.
July to October
The long dry season offers reliable general game viewing and coincides with the period when the migrating herds are normally in the wider Mara ecosystem. Exact arrival and departure dates vary with rainfall.
July and August are particularly busy and expensive. September and early October can retain much of the wildlife interest with a slightly calmer feel, depending on school holidays and camp availability.
November and December
The short rains usually refresh the landscape in November, often through afternoon or evening showers. Wildlife remains excellent and rates can be attractive outside the festive period.
December becomes busier around Christmas and New Year. Weather patterns are increasingly variable, so historical seasons should be treated as guidance rather than a promise.
Safari and coast together
Coastal conditions deserve separate consideration. January to March is broadly hot and settled; April and May are wetter; July and August can be cooler and windier, with local variation in seaweed and water conditions. September and October are often strong all-round months.
